There is a rich history of clowning stretching way
back into history. The court jester (or Fool) was a
man of great influence. His role was to inform the
king through humour about what was going on in the
King's court and to expose any plots against him. He
would also show where the kings actions or policies
were foolish. The court jester was a story teller,
comedian, juggler, acrobat, singer, secret agent,
informer, food tester and silent listener to all that
went on.
The modern Circus Clown is a performer of silly acts
and slapstick humour. He/she does not tell stories,
he has no influence and his/her routines do not have
a moral or political message. For many people the
circus clown is the representative of modern clowning.
The Holy Fool descends directly from the court jester
rather than the circus clown. For a Fool there is
always a message and so the Holy Fool brings a
message about the relationship between God and
mankind. He/she may be a story teller, poet,
comedian, puppeteer, juggler, balancer, acrobat,
singer, musician, illusionist, escape artist,
slapstic, or any combination of these.
Here at
we regard ourselves as Holy
Fools but refer to ourselves as Clowns. Our
performances have a Bible based message which is
relevant for our audience.
We are available for or parties, fairs, guest
services, outreaches, Sunday schools, children's
clubs, workshops, training events and other events.
