Chigwell Met Police Sports Club | Membership is restricted to Police Officers but the Club opens its gates several times a year for public functions. The most notable of these occasions are the Chigwell Show, usually at the end of August, and a spectacular firework display on or around November 5th. These events are always very popular and raise money for charities. The Club is housed in Chigwell Hall, which was built in 1876. It was commissioned by Alfred Savill and built by Norman Shaw. Alfred Savill founded Savill’s Estate Agency. Alfred's brother Walter had a joint enterprise with Norman Shaw which is still known as the Shaw Savill Shipping Line. After Mr. Savill died in 1905, Chigwell Hall was purchased by Mr. Walter Waugh and remained in his family until 1938, when it was purchased by the Metropolitan Police. |

Not All Airmen Fly was written to generate funds for the Roding Valley
Nature Reserve in Chigwell which now occupies the site of the former RAF
Chigwell. The Reserve is owned by Epping Forest District Council and the
book was privately published by the Council.
All 2000 copies had sold out by the late 1990's and they
would not be be able to print any more as the printing company who
held all the plates went bust some years ago so the plates no longer
exist.
But the good news is that there were reference copies lodged at
Loughton Library, EFDC Museum in Waltham Abbey, the Public Records Office
at Kew and also with the RAF Historical Group based at RAF Hendon and
these copies are all hopefully still there so anyone who would like to
read the book can access one of these. |
