Verity's Undertakers and the Pasadena Social Club
In 1910 part of George Verity's large new building for his Lowtown house
furnishing and undertaking business was gutted by fire. In the old
photograph are some of the 'thousands' who came the following day to wonder
at the damage. Latterly George Verity had converted part of the upper
storey into a roller skating rink. He installed an American maple floor, a
band, a uniformed manager from Hunslet, and called it Olympia. However,
the novelty soon evaporated and the week following the fire it was to have
been reopened by a cinematograph company. After the fire the damaged part
was rebuilt in a different style from the remainder of the block and opened
as the Palace Picture House. Seats were 2d, 4d and 6d, the most expensive
being downstairs at the front, like the stalls at the theatre. Today the
Pasadena Social Club occupies the premises.
