Littlemoor Road
Clarendon Buildings on the left were newly built in this photograph. At
the far end William Glover was in business as a 'fruit and Fish Merchant'.
Locally he was known as Billy Chuck and was especially popular with
children as he had a small cart from which he sold ice cream guaranteed
'morning gathered'. You can see the barbers pole of John Jessop's,
hairdresser and tobacconist. The row of cottages in the distance, now
Woodfield Terrace, was formerly known as 'Bob Spencers Row'. In 1868 Robert
Spencer built Brick Mill, a woolen mill beyond the houses on the right and
presumably bought this row of ten cottages for his handloom weavers. They
had been built in the early 19th century with the privies at the bottom of
the row, a long way away on a cold night for those living at the top. The
street sign for Crowthers Yard would be one of 50 such plates provided by
the Local Board in 1886 at 4/6 (22 1/2p) each. Made of cast iron the
border and lettering were guilded.
