The Chapel which is now a school (1999) |
Before the chapel was built meetings were held in a room on
Hammerton Field. Canon Motler of Bradford laid the foundation stone
for the Chapel in The Lanes in 1883. The cost of building the
Chapel/School was 1,200 pounds. The Bishop of Leeds, Dr. Cornthwaite,
opened the Chapel on the morning of Sunday 19th April 1884 and
dedicated it to St. Joseph the patron Saint of carpenters. The
building was designed as a place of worship and a school. It held
400 worshipers until the new church was built in 1933. The old chapel
still serves as a school for local catholic children.
