Cooperative Flour and Provision Society Lowtown
The Leeds Cooperative Flour and Provision Society opened their first
'provision' store in Pudsey in 1859. It moved to the new store seen here in
1873 where it remains today. The building was built by the Cooperative
Society and ajoins the Town Hall. Two more grocery shops
were opened at Greenside and Littlemoor. By 1882 the three shops had an
annual turnover of £20,000 so must have had a good share of the town's
custom. The two boys, in the old photograph, who look very young to be
working would probably be part-timers.
Sadly the Cooperative store in the centre of pudsey closed at 5pm on 1st July 1999. It is
now a wine bar
