Post Hill
For many years Post Hill has been a popular place for many people,
such as walkers, bird watchers and nature lovers but especially those
who own motorcycles. The photograph shows two riders competing in the
Motorcycle Hill Climb Trials, which were very much the rage during the
1920's. A special stone cobbled road was built from top to bottom of
one of the hills steep sides for the riders to negotiate. During the
Second World War the top of
Post Hill played quite an important role. An open prison was built and
held Italian Prisoners of War, who were allowed to work for the local
community but had to be back in camp for the evening curfew. The camp
also housed two anti-aircraft gun implacements. These were enormous
concrete structures with giant guns mounted on their roof's. The guns
were regularly used to attack enemy aircraft, sending huge flames
after the missiles they fired. In recent years some of the area around
Post Hill has been sold to build houses. Post Hill itself has had many
bids, one of which was from a company who wanted to build a dry ski
slope on its steep sides. Fortunately steps have been taken to turn
the hill into a country park.
