Waver Green
Waver Green was, at the time of the photograph, part of the towns
common land. It was right in the centre of Pudsey and had become the
first site for Pudsey market. The sheds or huts in the foreground
were businesses. Job Wilcocks had his hot pea saloon, 'Tripey Ross'
sold tripe,
James Galloway sold groceries, Jonathan Brayshaw had a
photographic studio, Billy Dibbs repaired boots and the towns first
fish and chip shop. In 1883 James Galloway moved to Joseph Walkers
druggist shop on 'Druggists Corner', named after the Joseph Walkers
bussiness. After a few years the corner became known as 'Galloways
Corner' but today is known simply as the 'lights' because or the
traffic lights on the junction. Part of the area was cleared in
1880 to make room for the Mechanics Institute which later became
the Town Hall. In 1889 most of the remaining area was cleared
and part of the site became the Midland bank two years later.
