Bonfires in Pudsey
One of Pudsey's oldest traditions is to celebrate local and national
events with a hugh bonfire. The picture above shows the bonfire built
to celebrate the Coronation of George V in June 1911. It was held on
Greentop. It measured 30 feet high, sixty feet in circumference and
had 160 gallons of oil and tar included to ensure a spectacular blaze.
Its erection was supervised by a local architect. The pole at the top
carried the Union Jack (the UK national flag). The bonfire was the
highlight of a full days celebration. In the morning there was a church
service at St.Lawrences. The afternoon started with a grand procession
and ended with sports and fireworks provided by the mayor. At 10pm the
flag was lowered by workmen and the bonfire was lit by the highways
surveyor.
