Leigh Mills Pudsey
Leigh Mills stood near the area now known as Stanningley bypass. The
mill was leased by the Leigh Mills Company and produced worsted yarn.
The mills housed 400 looms and employed 1,000 people at the peak of
production sometime around the 1890's. At the time there was such a
demand for employee's, due to the amount of mills in the area that
people were employed from places as far away as Holbeck and Beeston.
Most of the people employed by the Mills had to travel by tram at six
thirty in the morning to get to work on time. The wages around 1910
were roughly thirty English New Pence (which is less than a pound).
The next two pages show the destuction of Leigh Mills by fire.
