Buffy Lump Cottage
The old couple, posing in the old photograph outside their cottage at Buffy
Lump around the turn of the century, was probably cosidered by the
photographer an 'old world' scene even then. The cottage shown on the 1817
enclosure map, standing near Smalewell mill on the Pudsey upper moor before
it was enclosed. Surprisingly it survives, almost un altered, today. It is
built of sandstone from Uppermoor Quarry with corner stones set vertically
for extra strength. The roof, of heavy flagstone slabs, making a gentle
pitch essential, is typical of local roofing before lighter forms of
slating became available. Notice the two butts in the old photograph. Most
cottages without their own well and some way from a public well had a water
butt fed with rainwater from the guttering. Perhaps the other butt was for
'old wesh', or urine. This was bought by local mills for scouring cloth.
