Chapeltown Facing East
Chapeltown from the east. Chapeltowm is so called because of the old
anglican chapel of ease, laterly called All Saints, which once stood here.
The long wall on the left of the old photograph belonged to the chapel
graveyard. This was not cleared until 1922 when the cenotaph was built.
After St. Lawrence Church was consecrated in 1924 proposals to demolish the
old chapel were strongly opposed so it, and its graveyard, were left to
become increasingly derelict. In 1879 the Pudsey Local Board of Health's
reluctance to clear the site led to a Local Government Enquiry which
determined that the area must be cleared immediately. The Local Board
therefore had the chapel quietly demolished during the night. There was
such an uproar the following morning that the graveyard was left for
another 43 years.
