Pudsey Park childrens playground
The childrens playground was opened in April 1928 by the Duke and the
Duchess of York, the present Queen Mother. They were the first members of
the Royal Family to visit Pudsey. In addition to opening the childrens
playground they also opened the St. Lawrence baby clinic and laid the
foundation stone of the Pudsey baths. Crowds packed the royal route and the
church bells rang out. The playground, on the site of the derelict
recreational ground, was equipped with a paddling pool, sandpit, shelter,
refreshment kiosk, slides, swings and roundabouts through the generousity
of Councillor John Ben Ward. It was designed by an octagenarian, Mr.
Whickstead of Kettering, whose work Councillor Ward had seen and admired.
Pudsey's playground was a mecca for thousands of children travelling into
the town by tram. Perhaps a local paper was justified in its claim that
'Pudsey Playground has no equal in the North of England'.
