Pudsey Park
The opening of Pudsey park in 1889 was spectacular. The procession
represented all aspects of the town including the Local Board, School
Board, Burial Board, Board of Guardian, Pudsey Gas and Water Companies, the
Mechanics Institute, local postal services and political clubs. Led by
Pudseys Brass Band and the Ebenezer Primative Methodist Band the procession
wound its way round the Mechanics Institute (the towns most impressive
non-denominational building) and up to the Church Lane entrance to the
park. Here Mr. Briggs Priestley, M.P. for the Pudsey Division, opened the
gates with a solid silver key. The speech making was perforce cut short due
to the 'enormous - pressure of the crowd'. The crowds returned in the
evening to see the illuminations and the best firework display ever seen in
Pudsey. The old photograph shows the park just eight years old. The land
had previously been St. Lawrence Cricket ground. The pond was filled in
around 1945 and the site imaginatively tranformed into an extensive rock
garden with a network of twisting paths and bridges which delighted
thousands of small children. Today it is a rose garden.
