Waterloo Post Office
The photograph on the left must have been taken before 1906 as by then John
Webster's shop was also the Waterloo Post Office. Before that the Post
office was a few doors to the left. Pudsey then had a very efficient postal
service. At Waterloo, one of 12 sub Post Offices in the town, there were
four daily clearances of the post box and three daily deliveries. The
picture shows two drays, heavily laden with corn, or perhaps flour, each of
which takes three horses to draw it. John Webster and his helpers are ready
to heave the sacks into the first floor warehouse. There was still a steady
demand for horse corn before the advent of motor-cars. Apparently there was
also still a market for malt and hops showing that some people still brewed
their own beer, or 'drink'. Waterloo sub Post Office is still in its
original building which has been clad in concrete. Newspapers are now sold
instead of corn, malt and hops.
