35 Chapeltown
The photograph on the left shows William Henry Beaumont's butcher's shop at
35 Chapeltown. Until well into the this century all Pudsey butchers killed
their own beasts. Each Tuesday the cattle were driven up from Leeds cattle
market by Henry Haley whose shouting to urge animals up the last hill into
Pudsey became a familiar sound. As he urged them up Lowtown, along Robin
Lane, up Fartown and along to Greenside and Chapeltown he dropped beasts
off at various butchers. In 1900 there were no less than 21 butchers in the
town. The number of slaughter houses was a continuing concern to the
Medical Officer of Health. Many opened straight onto the street and killing
day always attracted crowds of children. This was especially so as most
butchers seemed to rely on the enthusiastic help of young boys pulling on a
rope to immobilise the beast whilst the butcher struck it with a pole axe.
Today a modern building stands on this site selling hardware.
