St.Lawrence Church Pudsey
Pudsey was in the old parish of Calverly although at least
since the 14th century it has had its own anglican chapel of
ease. In 1824 this was replaced by St. Lawrence Church, seen
here. The architect was Thomas Taylor who within 14 years
designed 16 churches in West Yorkshire and East Lancashire.
Pudsey Church is almost identical to Taylors Holy Trinity Church
at Huddersfield. The cost of £13,360 was met from a fund of
£1,000,000 government money, used to build new churches in
growing industrial towns. Thomas Taylor always managed to acquire
elevated sites for his churches and Pudsey is no exception. Its
tower is a landmark for many miles in all directions. The picture
on the top left was taken around 1898. Today the young trees have
matured, the blackened stonework cleaned and the 'table top'
gravestones cleared and laid along the paths. This corner was the
last site of the town stocks which had previously been under a
large tree near the present Kings Arms. They were last used in
1851.
