. .: Hints and Tips :. .
Here are a few tips and tricks for those starting out in R/C
modelling.
I hope they help you off to a good start!
TIP 1: Buy only the best parts and equipment that you can afford.
If you skimp here you will pay the price later.
TIP 2: Get help when you are just starting out. The experience of a veteran pilot can
mean the difference between a fun flying experience and disaster. These models are not toys.
They can be very complicated machines. Ask questions.
TIP 3: Make sure everything on the model is tight, straight, and secure.
These models have a lot of vibrating and moving parts that should be checked before every flight.
Assure that all flying surfaces and control surfaces are tight with minimal gap and slop.
Top grade hardware should always be used.
TIP 4: Invest in the proper tools and supplies to correctly construct your model.
Incidence meters, squares, straight edges, flat work table, quality adhesives, and others tools
can really make a difference. They will also make it easier to complete your project with
professional results.
TIP 5: Thoroughly pre-read all assembly manuals, plans, and safety sheets before starting
construction. Pre-fit all joints before using adhesives. Use the proper adhesive for each type
of material used.
TIP 6: Join the BMFA. Join a club in your area. The knowledge and expertise that can be
found here easily outweighs the cost of membership. Also the insurance coverage that comes with
memberships can really come in handy in the event of an accident.
This is probably the most important part of responsible modelling and flying.
TIP 7: Safety First! Be aware of those around you. Keep spectators at a safe distance
from yourself and your model. Fly only on a sanctioned field or well away from others and
their property. Read the BMFA Safety Rules and the rules of your club.
Abide by these rules. They are there for your safety and the safety of others.
Check all of your equipment, model, and finally do a range check of your radio equipment
prior to flight. This can save you considerable expense and headaches.
TIP 8: Relax and have fun! The whole purpose of this hobby is to have fun and learn
some new things along the way. Be courteous to other pilots and spectators and you will be
rewarded with friendship and valuable help.
I hope these few tips will help you get started in the right direction.
Read magazines and books and find out all you can to make yourself a better builder and pilot.
Happy Flying!!
