Services to Carers
We provide many services to Carers in the Swansea and Lliw Valley area. Some of these are listed below.

If you would like more information on any of these services, please get in touch - see our Contact Details page. You can also email us on info@alzswansea.org.uk. (All correspondence and/or telephone conversations will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.)

  • 24 hour telephone helpline - (01792) 891691/898383
  • We offer a 24 hour telephone helpline so that carers are able to get help at any time of the day or night.

During our office hours, 9.30am-3.30pm Monday to Friday, carers can telephone us at The Lodge (01792) 891691/898383. At all other times, The Lodge answerphone provides the home telephone number of a contact. Carers should not hesitate to call in an emergency, no matter what the time.

We also provide a "chat service". We regularly telephone carers to ask how they are getting on. Conversations last up to an hour at times. Often the fact that someone is prepared to listen to their problems is all they need, and all we have provided is time - the most important gift to anyone.

  • Sitting Service
  • Our Sitting Service is designed to allow the carer to have some free time. We provide a sitter to look after the patient for a few hours, allowing the carer to go shopping, have a rest or anything else they need.

Our sitters are trained by the Branch in the care of patients with dementia and are fully capable of dealing with any problems which may arise.

The hours offered to carers depends on current funding. However, we usually offer up to 8 hours per week to each family, but more can be provided if the need is great. We can also offer overnight sitting which allows the carer to get a good night's sleep.

  • Carers' Meetings
  • On the first Thursday evening and the first Wednesday afternoon of each month, we have Carers' meetings at The Lodge, Garngoch Hospital. These are open to all carers; we contact most of them monthly to remind them.

On the third Wednesday evening of each month, we also have a Carers' meeting at Westfa Day Centre, Phillips Parade, Swansea. The carers are again contacted to remind them.

These meetings are popular because they enable Carers to talk to one another and help to alleviate the pressures in their lives. Although they counsel one another, the meetings are guided by Mrs.Rae Baker who is a volunteer and a member of the Swansea and Lliw Valley Branch Committee.

  • Weekend/Week-long breaks
  • Regular weekend and week-long breaks are organised for patients and carers to help to break the monotony of the home environment.

  • Social Evenings
  • Social Evenings are held in different parts of Swansea every four months. Patients, carers, ex-carers volunteers and other members of the Alzheimer's Society are all very welcome to attend. Entertainment and refreshments are provided.

  • Equipment Lending
  • We have an equipment lending service. This is to alleviate problems carers have in acquiring necessary equipment for Alzheimer's sufferers. It may be possible for us to purchase a specific piece of equipment if it is required by a Carer.

  • Library
  • We have a collection of a few hundred books, both fiction and non-fiction, and a variety of books for assisting with practical hobbies such as craftwork and so on. We also have a limited number of video cassettes. Carers may borrow these items from us for no charge. We do not impose a time limit on return.
