After 25 years' service at Trostre for British Steel, Hywel retired in 1998. This gave him the ideal opportunity to give something back to the community with voluntary work, and the Alzheimer's Society seemed the logical place for someone who cared for his mother with the disease during the 1970's.
Within the Branch, Hywel concentrated most of his time on the difficult task of fundraising. A whole range of support and activities has seen around £10,000 being raised for Branch funds during the past year, so his hard work is definitely paying dividends.
Away from the Branch, his interest in golf has seen him appointed as Vice-Captain of the seniors at the Alltygraban club. He is also a Deacon at a Welsh Independent Chapel and a keen follower of sport in general.
