Anna's Berlin Operation, 5th July 2004

We flew out of London City Airport on the 30th June, arriving at Tegel Airport, Berlin at 6.30pm. On the 1st July we went to see Prof. Jovanovic at The Benjamin Franklin Hospital in Berlin (Dr Waner was not due to arrive until Sunday the 4th July), he told us that the operation was due for Monday and that we should be at the hospital at 7.30am.

1st July: Anna before her operation. The red lines show where Dr Waner made incision's on the outside of Anna's face, and the blue line show where he made incision's on the inside of her lips.
3rd July: So we had the weekend to ourselves, to try to put the coming operation at the back of our minds we took in a little sightseeing.

Anna and Annette in the Unter Den Linden, which is a wide avenue leading up to the Brandenburge Gate.
3rd July: One of the weirder things we came across, in the middle of the City in a fenced off area the Berlin Beach Club. Complete with sand, palm trees and deck chairs.
4th July: Gary, Annette and Anna with Mark and Debbie Webster and their daughter Charlotte. We had been in e-mail contact with Mark and Debbie before going to Berlin. They told us that Dr Waner would operate on Charlotte in Berlin so we meet up with them.
We all arranged to meet Dr Waner in Mark & Debbie's hotel room on Sunday evening so we could all have a pre-operation chat with him.

5th July: The morning of Anna's operation. Anna is showing you the magic cream that was spread on her hands so it would not hurt too much when the canular was inserted into her veins. When the time came for the canular to be inserted Anna was kicking and screaming, she knew what was going to happen, she was crying out for her brothers and her nan but the worst part was when she said to us "Please don't let them hurt me" this made us both cry.

5th July: Anna was wheeled to the operating theatre on her bed, she was given a sedative to calm her down and to help her forget what she was going through. She was taken into the operating theatre by a nurse and gave us a wave goodbye as she went, this again made us both cry.
5th July: Anna's operation was due to take about 2 hours, After about 2 1/2 hours Anna was brought up to the recovery room, but she started to suffer bleeding from the cut above her eye which could not be stopped so it was decided to anaesthetise her again and take her back to the theatre, it was during this time that one of Anna's teeth was knocked out.
5th July: Anna finally returned to us after about 5 1/2 hours looking very battered and bruised.
6th July: Charlotte Webster (who had her operation before Anna) and her Nan Helen with Anna and Annette.
7th July: Annette and Anna with Professor Jovanovic who assisted Dr Waner.
8th July: The day we flew home, Anna looking like she has gone yet another 10 rounds with Tyson, she was finally able to open her eye as she is showing you here.

We would like to thank the following people who helped Anna and us:
Dr Milton Waner, Prof. Jovanovic, Dr Kandalakis, The Webster family, and all the people who made us welcome in Berlin. Thank you all.
