Frequently Asked Questions

These are some of the most common questions we recieve, and their current answers. We hope that they are helpful.

What if i have a medical condition?
All Members are required to complete a self-declaration form, which asks various questions about your state of health. If you can answer 'No' to all questions then you simply sign the form. If you would answer 'Yes' then you need to consult with a specialist Diving doctor who may, following consultation, declare you fit but possibly for a restricted period of time. Further information can be foundon the form itself, available for download on the welcome page.

Do i have to be fit to dive?
Divign is a physical activity, and we would suggest that you try to be reasonably fit, but not super fit. There are heavy weights to be caried, heavy equipment, occassionally strenuous swimming activities etc. there is more information on the main BSAC website if you are worried about something.

What if i am already qualified with another organisation?
if you already have a diving qualification then a BSAC branch can offer you a regular programme of dives and the opportunity to learn advanced techniques and specialised skills. But the real advantage is in having a group of dive buddies who meet regularly, both for diving and social events, with whom you can gain further experience. Get in touch for more information on this.

Do you have a welfare policy or similar?
The BSAC does have a formal child and vulnerable persons policy that all branches follow. Details of this are available on request directly from BSAC

What about if i have a disability?
It is not impossible to learn to dive if you suffer from a disability. Indeed,BSAC run disability awareness courses and there are several instructors currently teaching around the UK who have physical disabilities, including having only one leg. As learning to dive is performance based, as long as you are able to meet the required standard, even if a technique needs to modified, then you can qualify. We cannot lower standards in order to help a disabled diver learn as that would be totally inappropriate, but we can use alternative techniques to do it. That said, there are equipment and logistical considerations that may prevent or make the process much more difficult.

What do i get when i join the BSAC?
What do I get with BSAC membership?
12 months membership to the BSAC, which gives you, access to our international diver and instructor training scheme. 3rd Party Limited Public Liability Insurance up to £5 million and a Monthly issue of 'Dive' magazine.

What is the difference between BSAC & PADI?
The BSAC is the Governing Body for the sport of scuba diving in the UK and is a club-based organisation that offers training for members through a branch or intensive courses through a BSAC school. PADI is a commercial business that will only offer diving courses.
How old do you have to be to learn to dive?
BSAC rules state that you must be 14 or over to learn to dive. Each branch has its own rules, and you should ask them for their policy. Each BSAC instructor, can reserve the right not to teach any person and without having to give a reason. There are instructors that will only teach their friends, as well as instructors that have decided they are not going to teach children.
