Home Zeebrugge Graves at Dover

23rd April 1918 - Zeebrugge Raid.

Although German U-boat operations had been contained in 1918, they remained a serious threat to Allied shipping, particularly in the English Channel. Many of the enemy submarines operating in this area were based at the Belgian seaports of Zeebrugge and Ostend, which were both connected by canal to the inland port of Bruges, where further U-boats and destroyers were accommodated. The possibility of neutralising these bases had often been considered by the Admiralty but action was not authorised until Vice-Admiral Sir Roger Keys, commander of the Dover Patrol, developed a plan for a blocking operation. Some 75 ships, under Keys' command, took part in the raid, which began in the early hours of  23rd April 1918.

A diversionary attack was mounted against the mile-long Zeebrugge mole, with some 200 marines being landed from the old cruiser Vindictive. They were to destroy German gun positions and blow up installations, but immediately came under heavy fire and were unable to achieve all of their objectives. The bridge connecting the mole to the shore was destroyed by an old submarine that had been packed with high explosive.

At the same time three obsolete cruisers filled with concrete - Thetis, Intrepid and Iphigenia - were moved into the inner harbour under heavy German fire. Thetis did not reach the canal entrance - she had to be scuttled prematurely after hitting an obstruction - but the other two were sunk at its narrowest point. However, they were not positioned correctly and failed to block the channel completely. As a result, it could still be used by U-boats and small destroyers.

Vindictive and the other ships then withdrew, bringing the ' courageous and thrilling exploit' to a close. There were nearly 200 British dead and a larger number wounded. The operation is noted for its examples of individual heroism, with as many as eight VCs being awarded. It provided a much needed boost to British morale even if at best it had been no more than a partial success.

The Vindictive arrived in Dover at 8 o'clock the following morning to great cheering from all the other ships in the harbour. The residents of Dover, including Admiral Keyes wife, reported that during the raid they could hear the guns on the Belgian coast seventy five miles away and that the sound had rattled their windows.
