Long Bucby 20 Biggleswade 19

Midlands 4 East (South)

A converted penalty try in the last minute of the game was just not enough to get a point for Biggleswade. But away from home and on a very tacky pitch it was a spirited result.

Playing up the slope in the first half Biggleswade were rocked back by an early score. But they rallied well and went forward with much more intent. Matt Keen restored at fly-half in place of the injured Adam Sewell injected pace and flair. While Tom O’Connor now a much stronger player thanks to his work on building sites always looked dangerous.

It was Tom O’Connor in the centre that made a big dent in the opposition’s line. It put Biggleswade in a good attacking position. From the next passage of play he rounded off the move with a try in the corner.

Exploiting home advantage Long Buckby added another try just before half-time to lead 12-5 at the break. But with the advantage of the slope to come Biggleswade were more confident than in past weeks.

But Buckby on their own patch (more a cabbage patch) seemed to have the game wrapped up when they added another try and a penalty to take a comfortable lead. Turning with confidence on the slippery pitch was always a lottery.

Biggleswade refused to lie down and the arrival of Steve Cocozza playing his first game of the season after a long lay off with a strained calf added the impetus required. .

Perky scrum half Ross Taylor in the thick of the action all afternoon went over for a try from close range after good work by the forwards. Mark Rastrick adding the conversion from a long way out. Then in the closing seconds Buckby did everything illegal to stop Biggleswade scoring giving the referee no choice but to award a penalty try.

Conditions were not good for rugby with a blustery wind, sticky ground and a slippery ball that was constantly covered in mud. But Biggleswade played with some spirit and a dogged determination that made the journey seem worthwhile.

Team: A Burke, D Rogers, R Collarbone, I Jones, T Griffiths, M Peace (S Cocozza), K Marshall, I Robinson, R Taylor, M Keen, M Rastrick, M Cray, T O’Connor, I Beckitt, S Churms.

This Saturday Biggleswade entertain Rushden & Higham the only team they have beaten in the league this year. But after going more than half the season without a win Rushden’s most recent results have been better.

Sheepwalk Pitches.

A big thank you to those players and parents who helped stone-pick Sheepwalk this morning. The top (railway) pitch has now had a great deal of work done on it, next time we will concentrate on the "road" pitch. Good to see some of the senior players, U14s parents and committee members helping, and the U15s who not only helped stone pick, but had a full-on training session on the "railway" pitch for the first time. Thanks to all, details of the next day will follow, however, if anyone can spare an hour or so on a Sunday, the road pitch is the one to concentrate on.

 NEXT WEEK

BBC TopGear comes from "Biggy rugby" area and might feature a club member, look out Next week, Sunday 25th Feb 8PM

Biggleswade 3 Stockwood Park 18 - Midlands 4 East (South) 17/02/06

Biggleswade slumped to another defeat despite a bright start. The result leaves them anchored to the foot of the table and relegation almost certain. It was their first game together for three weeks. A friendly and the re-arranged league match against BBOB were both off.

Biggleswade started strongly suggesting that a close match was in prospect. The pressure forced errors from the visitors. Eventually at a third attempt Biggleswade went into the lead as a result of a penalty from captain Mark Rastrick this week playing on the wing.

Tom O’Connor and Martin Cray were in the centre with Matt Keen at full-back. Martin Matthews came into the side on the wing with Martin “Potton” Peace returning to the pack. Ian Robinson made a welcome return at number eight and was a live-wire throughout especially from the back of the lineout.

The early lead was short lived. On almost their first visit to Biggy’s half Stockwood went through a yawning gap in the centre for the opening try. Stockwood added another before half-time. The defence was stretched so thin that it was three quarters against props that was no contest.

The score stayed 10-3 to the visitors until deep in the second half. Stockwood added a penalty and then another late try.

Adam Sewell was forced to retire with a damaged foot. Simon Rutt was summoned from the distant third pitch to take his place. It was Simon’s first outing for the 1st XV this season. Afterwards he claimed that if he had been given a pass earlier he would have scored. Always the optimist is Simon. It would have been from his own half with the covering defence rapidly approaching like a swarm of bees!

Next week is an away trip to Long Buckby. This is the second of five successive league matches that will decide Biggleswade’s fate. The other games are Rushden & Higham (home), BBOB (away) and Blackley (home). The remaining matches are Stockwood Park (away) and Oadby-Wyggestonians (home).

Team: A Burke, D Rogers, R Collarbone, I Jones, T Griffiths, M Peace, K Marshall, I Robinson, R Taylor, A Sewell (S Rutt), M Rastrick, T O’Connor, M Cray, M Matthews, M Keen.

Greene King Cup

Biggleswade 3rd XV 3 Black Horse 6 (aet)

Yet again the first team league match against BBOB was postponed this because their pitch was waterlogged. No such problem at Biggleswade where the 3rd XV were able to play their scheduled cup match against the Black Horse from Hertford.

The match started on the furthest Sheep Walk pitch on a surface that was remarkably dry. The Black Horse had a couple of early pots at goal but both went wide. Biggleswade finally got down the other end of the pitch after a quarter of an hour of dogged defence.

Disaster then struck new player David Gorgette (he is French) who landed awkwardly at a lineout and broke his ankle. An ambulance was immediately summoned but as it had to come from Bedford the match was switched back to the main ground.

Mark Rastrick landed a penalty for Biggleswade to give them a narrow lead that never looked enough. Black Horse equalised with the last kick of the eighty minutes to take the match into extra time. They then snatched the win with another successful mid-way through the second period of extra time.

Special mention to Alan Hilditch who struggled on with an ankle injury when all the replacements had been used. And best wishes from all the team to Dave Gorgette for a speedy recovery.

Mobbs Memorial Match celebrates 80th anniversary

The Mobbs Memorial Match will celebrate its 80th anniversary when the prestigious showpiece fixture is again staged at Bedford's Goldington Road ground on Wednesday March 14 (7pm)

The game between East Midlands was inaugurated in 1921 and has been played annually, with the exception of the war years, since.

The match commemorates the achievements of Lt Col Edgar Mobbs DSO who was killed in fighting at Passchendale in July 1917.

Mobbs, a former pupil of Bedford Modern School, played his club rugby for Olney then Northampton, whom he joined in 1904. He captained Northampton in 1905, first played county rugby for East Midlands in 1908 and won the first of his seven England caps on the wing against Australia at Blackheath in 1909.

The following year his leadership skills were again recognised and he was chosen to captain England in their victory over France in Paris.

Mobbs was 32 at the outbreak of the First World War and was considered too old for active service. But he formed a Battalion of Sportsmen from friends and fellow sportsmen and 250 of them joined the Northamptonshire Regiment.

Mobbs was seriously injured at the Battle of Guillemont but he was awarded the DSO for gallantry and promoted to Lt Col on his return to action.

He lost his life leading an attack in a hail of bullets leading his men in an attack on an enemy machine gun post. His body was never recovered from the battlefield and his name is recorded on the Battle Honours List at the Menin Gate.

The Mobbs Memorial Match has remained as one of the major representative fixtures in England since it was first played 86 years ago.

Last year the Barbarians defeated East Midlands 63-17 in an entertaining game with former Wales lock Craig Quinnell setting a record for a Barbarians forward by scoring five tries.

The 80th Mobbs Memorial Match will be preceded by a wreath-laying at the War Memorial on The Embankment at Bedford at 4.30pm.

Lacrosse comes to Biggy, Friday 16th February!

Following the success of Lacrosse in local schools, BRUFC will host a Lacrosse camp on February 16th. The English Lacrosse Association has drafted in a number of top coaches from the USA to develop the game in the UK.

The training camp will be from 11am until 3pm and will be for school years 7/8/9 but there are no limits on ages.

For full details or to book a place see the message board, or ring Jim on 07796 048710.

The ultimate aim is to form Biggleswade Lacrosse Club, possibly based at the rugby club.

  Sheepwalk pitches granted planning permission!

The pitches on Sheepwalk have been granted full planning consent, meaning that we are not just restricted to 28 days use per annum. The full 15 acre site has been given planning permission which will see a further pitch developed plus, in time, a large training area.
The consent will be reviewed annually by MBDC, so we need to stick strictly to the agreed restrictions on access, noise etc.

The pitches will be available to the club on the from September 1st through to May1st annually, in accordance with the terms of the lease, a hay crop could then be taken from the outfield, maintaining its agricultural status.

The club would not have been able to proceed with the Sheepwalk project without help from the following people and organisations, for which we are very grateful.
  • Bernard Newman, (landowner)
  • John Thoday
  • Richard Phipps
  • Jim Dunn
  • W J Kendall & Sons
  • Masterseeds (Masstock Arable Ltd)
  • Mid Beds District Council
  • all of those who have helped prepare the pitches and supported their use.
