Biggleswade Rugby Report

Can Biggleswade Rugby Club avoid the drop from Midlands 4? If they could, do they want to stay in the league?

Although Biggleswade are seemingly anchored to the bottom of the table with minus two points escape is not impossible. The Club are in this perilous position after being deducted four points for playing two unregistered players. Both had played at the Club for sometime but had slipped through the net. Winning five of their remaining league matches could be enough for Biggleswade to stay where they are next season.

This is not the impossible feat it seems at first glance, as due to some quirky fixture arrangements Biggleswade have already played the top three clubs in the league twice. But they have yet to play a trio of clubs in the bottom half, home or away. The one club they have played is Rushden & Higham who they beat at Higham Ferrars.

Oadby-Wyggestonians (based in south Leicester), Long Buckby and Stockwood Park are all to be played twice.

Biggleswade’s poor run has been caused by a desperate shortage of players. More than half of last season’s squad are missing for one reason or another and many of the back up players have been sidelined too.

If Biggleswade could just break the losing habit they might have a chance of survival. But would it be better to drop a league, re-group and get some wins against lesser sides and climb back stronger and with more confidence?

The first game of the New Year is an away trip to Northampton BBOB who are mid-table. They fancy their chances of doing the double and have ensured their Vice-Presidents are assembled to add to the vociferous home support. But hopefully the Biggleswade’s team resolution is to try even harder and reverse the run of losses.

14 – 7 Biggy Bystanders Win against Thorney – 23/12/2006

Thorney returned to Peterborough the losers following defeat against Biggleswade 3s.  A visit to www.thorney.co.uk confirms Thorney brought a mixed side as their first team were game less, so were expecting a win.  Dave the Bar returned to captain his side bringing a few tips learnt from his games with the ones, mainly play good old fashioned rugby.  Which is exactly what they did.

Front Row of Fage, Place and Scad were solid throughout, the early introduction of the four stage "crouch, touch, pause, engage” sequence was to be played, following a disappointing outing last week, the front row are getting to know and accept the procedure this week.

Thorney opened the score line with an unconverted try but this woke Biggy up who replied with a try converted by Elcock to take the lead.

Sean made several dashing runs but went un-awarded, this week.

The next score came from a solid scrum, shipped out to the backs with Lenny emerging through several players to put the ball down for a try.  Phil converted from almost identical kicking position to his first.

Midlands 4 East (South)

Peterborough Lions 41 Biggleswade 10

A try in the last 15 minutes flattered the score in the lions favour, but by then Biggleswade, despite some spirited defence, were dead and buried.

The Pack were at full-strength but the back line was an assortment of players with at least three forwards by first choice.  Chris Mills was playing his first game ever at full-back and Mark “Potton” Peace was on the wing.  Ben Caulfield, once a flanker, was in the centre alongside Adam Sewell while Ian Beckett was on the wing.  They all gave their best tackling and covering with great determination although outpaced by the marauding Lions

After a promising start Biggy were rocked by a converted try.  It came after a long penalty kick, which failed to find touch and was run all the way back.  A very dubious penalty awarded for dropping the scrum saw the lions stretch their lead with a penalty.

Generally the forwards performed well with Iain Jones soaring high in the cold rarefied atmosphere.  Ian Robinson was a thorn in the oppositions side until forced to withdraw with an ankle injury.  Coach Peter Biernis went less than a minute before receiving a lecture from the referee.  Peter had opened up a friendly dialogue with a Lions player he had sent off the previos week when in referee mode.

It was a familier story with Biggleswade being unable to turn pressure into points at one end.  At the other every time they had a chance the pacey Peterborough players crossed for a try.

Apart from a Mark Rastrick penalty and conversion Biggleswades only points came from burly centre Adam Sewll.  Turned down as a potentioal striker with the United, Adam used all his dribbling skills to hack the ball sixty yards and win the race for the touchdown.

Scores  for Caterers

We have been approached by Hitchin Lacrosse Development Programme with a view to using  Biggy as a potential base for a local club.

On Saturday 30th December they hope to run a childrens (both boys and girls 12/13/14 year old) development day for some of the players who are already playing at middle school, mainly Henlow Middle, Etonbury and the Bedford schools. Initially this will be a session to see how much interest there is in the area. Hitchin is one of the strongest club in the country and the session at Biggleswade will be run by professional Lacrosse coaches from the USA where the game is huge.

Like us, the lacrosse club is working in partnership with Sandy Upper School Sports College.

If  successful, further sessions are planned.

All welcome Further details can be obtained from  Steven McDermott 07768 093762

On the 10th of November I was invited down to London with my mum and dad to attend a rugby legend's dinner to raise money for the variety club. The variety club were the charity who kindly donated half the cost of my wheelchair, so it was great to be able to help them out a bit. The main purpose of being there was to give a talk on my injury, how I have come to terms with it and how my wheelchair has given me my independence. It was a full hall, with some of the biggest names in Rugby, so I was pretty nervous about doing it but it went okay in the end. On the evening, I met Gavin Hastings, Lawrence Dallaglio, Willie John McBride, Andrew Merton's, and Gareth Edwards as well as the Duke of Edinburgh. It was a good night, although I was pretty knackered for Uni the next day!
