Under 9's Won Cambs County Festival

and

Under 11's won the St. Neots County Festival

Nice to see this posted on Biggy Message Board:

Hi, I would like to congratulate you all on a fantastic match against St Neots which was played in the true spirit of the game. This was a joy to referee (as were your previous matches). A special thank you to your coaches & all the parents who always make me feel welcome whenever we meet at various competitions. Finally a great big WELL DONE!! to the fantastic effort put in by the kids & a good win against a great team. Finally I like to think we gave you something to think about in our game against you as there was a lot of buzzing amongst the coaches at half time when we had you pinned at your end for most of the first half, but you came out strong the second half & showed what a very good team you are. (Revenge next season!!!). Hope to see you all in the summer for a spot of training at Biggleswade. Well done!!

Best regards Mark Jabri Club Coaching Coordinator Dunstable Rugby Club

April 24th 2007 saw the well attended AGM and heard presentations from outgoing club officers and those up for re-election.
Both chairman John Thoday and 06/07 first XV captain Mark Rastrick commented on the tough year that the club and first XV in particular had, with the first XV being relegated. Loosing 13 players from the previous seasons team due to injury and unavailability dealt a blow that the team did not recover from.
However, on a positive note, Colts manager Warren Churms was congratulated on the performance of the Colts, and the condition of the pitches has been praised by many visiting clubs and the EMRU. Thanks to Tony Munns for this.
Stuart Dunn stood down after four years as treasurer and was thanked for his work, and for consolidating the accounts.
Nigel Aldis was thanked for his many years on various committees.
Mini and Youth sections will be brought together, and the older Youth teams will be integrated into the senior playing set up under Stan Matthews and senior coaches.

Former Biggy players to move on the higher level rugby in 06/07 season include.
Charlie Beech (Northampton Saints & England)
Joe Raitt (London Welsh)
Andrew Savage (Nottingham Rugby)
and current BRUFC member Pete Shea (England Deaf Rugby)

  Reflections on the Colts' Season

A very enjoyable season of Colts rugby has come to an end and it has proved to be a very worthwhile time for all concerned.

Last summer, when my son Leo approached me and said that he had "one or two" mates who were interested in playing rugby I said I would be happy to help them train and learn some basic skills. If there was a growing interest we hoped we could approach the Rugby Club for facilities and fixtures. It would be a difficult task, though, as nearly all the interest was from current 6th Form and ex-Stratton schoolboys, for whom very little rugby had been organised or played in the past, whilst all other club Colts teams would have many years experience of playing together.

So, many texts and phone calls later, Leo informed me that he reckoned up to 20 boys were interested. I spoke to John Thoday and he agreed to support the idea of pre-season training at the Club and if we could raise a team then so much the better.

Pre-season was interesting, with numbers varying between 8 and 18. Long, short, tall, fat, thin, fit, unfit, fast and slow all turned up - a typical rugby squad in fact! A few fell by the wayside and a few were added but overall it looked like we might be able to raise 15 for a game when required. What was obvious, though, was the lack of rugby experience - and etiquette. Some of the lads were quite adept but many had played little or no rugby at all and were facing a crash course to set themselves up for selection.

Some interesting and enthusiastic training sessions ensued and it soon became apparent who were going to be the regular, keen trainers (Scad, Tom Saunders, Dave Benbow, JB, Tom Farren, Leo, Tim Wilkes, Rojer and Ripon). An evening fixture was arranged against Datchworth U17s and the lads had something to look forward to. Having spent the majority of their time on handling and ball retention exercises, tackling formed the basis of the last two sessions before the first match and how it paid off.

Eighteen lads turned up for the first game, which was encouraging. Most didn't know where they played but we managed to put up a good fight and tackled everything that moved. Much of the lineout and scrummaging work was done in the hour before kick-off but the basis of a team was founded and we knew what we had to work on - everything! Nonetheless, this was a good start and a 17-7 loss was no disgrace against an experienced outfit.

Some players faded away and some just never trained but still fancied a game when there was one arranged. This was a little disappointing because we needed the numbers for the games but couldn't put team strategies into practise in training. The stalwarts continued to put everything into their rugby development, though and further encouraging performances against Bedford Swifts (0-27) and Rushden and Higham (won 39-17) followed. The Rushden win was a fantastic performance against a weaker team than some we played but saw some superb handling and attacking rugby. We then met Northampton BBOB (8-42) who were much too strong for us, yet still their Manager had some encouraging words for us afterwards, as did their players. It did show who our mentally strong players were and who could match up to this level. This is the beauty of rugby - if you do your best it is acknowledged by all - and some of our lads were getting the "bug".

It was proving difficult to arrange fixtures - most Colts teams were in Leagues and just too strong for us, but we had to play them when we could or we'd have had no games. Once the lads had a few games under their belts, the Seniors benefited, too, and a few Colts graced the Club in more experienced company. By the end of the season Scad, Leo, Tom Saunders and Tom Farren had several games for the 2nds and 3rds whilst Harry Dix and John Barton also tried their hand. Chris Mills, who joined the Colts during the season, was already a regular senior player and he made a big difference to us. There are many others that will need to play senior rugby next year and I will do my utmost to stay in touch with them to encourage this. It is good for the club and it is good for them - don't forget that in September 2006 most of them had not played any rugby.

We were not helped by our lack of scrum-half availability due to work commitments and a bad injury to Leo's shoulder before Christmas as this meant no fly-half either. The back play suffered but the forwards made really good progress and we won much more possession as the season progressed. Once Tom Cookman, John Barton and Leo were available we were a different side - they never once played in the same team!

The whole atmosphere of rugby - the changing room meet, hard but fair game, shower, bar, speaking to the ref and opposition, singing, man-of-the-match drinks, etc - was rubbing off slowly on the Colts and they should go from strength to strength now. We had some hard games against Stockwood park (twice), Dunstablians (twice) and Swifts (x 3) which were all enjoyable. Sadly, probably our worst performance was on the 1st XV pitch in front of a good crowd against Dunstablians - nerves? But, it is another experience in the memory bank to learn from and we won the drinking games afterwards!

By the end of the season we had regularly put out between 15 and 18 boys, with the exception of the Referee's Cup game against Dunstablians when 12 heroes went down 25-0 against an excellent side. I know the lads have enjoyed their experience and I really hope that at least half of them will continue their rugby education at Biggleswade. Some are off to university and some will leave the area due to work but when they are back for a weekend, they know what to do on a Saturday afternoon.

Thanks boys - it's been a pleasure. See you at the Club Dinner.

U14s County Cup Final ends in deadlock!
Ampthill U14s 0 Bedford Blues U14s 0 A large crowd saw both Amps and Bedford fight out a scoreless draw in the Beds County Cup at Biggleswade.

Both sides had chances to score from penalties, and Ampthill had the majority of the play, being camped in the Bedford half for most of the match, but failed to cross the 'Blues' line. At the final whistle, referee Andy Pratt from Luton noted that both sides had played to the maximun time allowed for U14s, so the game was tied, even though Biggy offered to switch 'extra time' to the floodlit pitch.

Both teams praised Biggleswade for hosting. Club Chairman John Thoday presented the trophy, to be held for six months by each team.

BIGGY TWOS TAKE THE PLATE AT THE DEATH !!

Greene King Cup Premiere Plate Final  2007 : 21/04/07

Biggleswade 2nd XV Potton 10 (held at Hitchin RUFC)

On a beautiful sun kissed afternoon, Biggy's seconds made the short trip over to Old Hales Way, Hitchin to play their old foes and friends from Potton.  The two's had previously locked horns with Potton twice this season in the League and beaten them soundly on both occasions. Indeed the last time Potton had inflicted a victory on the two's was back in April of 2003, but this time Potton had got to the final by beating St Neots and Cambridge and it would be no understatement to say they fancied their chances.  This only added to the spice to what is always a feisty, keenly contested local derby.

Biggy's side was missing influential Captain Simon Rutt, who earlier in the week had had surgery on his hand, but was now honoury water boy and first aider ! However the enigmatic Joe Jordan lead by example and won the toss and elected to kick on the dust bowl that is Hitchin's 1st XV pitch and with the sun facing and slight breeze facing Potton.  The first quarter was akin to a game of chess, the early exchanges mirroring how the game would pan out, with neither team giving much away.  Both packs sized each other up and didn't give an inch, Biggy's wily front row of Stubby, Stan and Flacky certainly enjoyed their foray in the sun.  In a game of cat and mouse, the scrum halves erstwhile Justin Maddocks for Biggy and the impressive Matty Brown for the Potts certainly played their part. As both sides went to create the first openings, their was impressive tackling from Joe and Albert the Lion on Biggy's part and for Potts Alex Small was undoubtedly Man of the Match with great dynamic play the whole of the eighty minutes.  However, it was Biggy that plundered the lead after excellent work from Albert the Lion, leading to a ruck, where UB and Jules did enough to secure the ball for it to be shipped out to the backs. From there Evergreen Greer danced enough before popping to Rosco Taylor (making a rare appearance for the two's at full back) to dive in, in the corner. Time and again, the Potts tried to probe Biggy's back line defence, but with a combo of reliable Rosco, Officer Matthews and scintillating Shov there was no way they would breach that line in this half.  The try was unconverted by evergreen one. Although in the lead, Biggy's back chat and ill-discipline cost them dear, Potton seized on this and popped over a valuable penalty.  In the space of five minutes, Biggy were then hit with a series of injuries, Joe left the pitch not knowing who he was or where he was playing (no change there !) and the goliath that is Andy 'Jade Goody' Peat seriously injured his knee. We wish Andy well in his recovery.  These were replaced with the dynamic duo of Tom 'Aussie' Elcock and burly Adam Sewell.  However Biggy came close to scoring again after excellent work from the pack and particularly the oak that is Richard Kendall, unfortunately for Biggy - Potton's defence seized on Biggy taking it once yard too many and eventually kicked out with the line beckoning.  Twinkle Toes hampered by a calf injury nearly danced his way to the line, but again Potton's defence and particularly Smally, Wolfy and Gideon's robust tackling all played their part in sound defence.  With the sun becoming warmer, the game showed no sign of slowing up and half time was a welcome reprise for the sides.

A sterling team talk lead by injured Captain Simon Rutt, left the Biggy side just how much effort would be needed to achieve the victory.  The second half was however more of the same.  Both sides forwards wise were more than happy to mix it, with particularly the wise old ones from Biggy Jules, UB and Flacky very much for the cause, Stan tried the wink ball - but Potton had obviously read the script and he was hit with some serious tackles.  Justin foraged like he had done all season and never gave up the cause.  Midway through the half, Potton broke away and it looked odds on they would score, however their was excellent courageous tackling from Officer Matthews - who sieved his opposite number down. He was ably supported by Albert. The Lion will leave Biggy in the Autumn to return to his native land and he will be sorely missed.  With the game reaching the last twenty minutes, pin point kicking from Twinkle Toes into Potts' 22, lead Biggy winning the resulting line out.  From the recycled ball, there was some deft passes with lead the evergreen Roy in for a simple try, which he missed the conversion by a whisker.  Potton were clearly not finished , they were buoyed by their impressive support on the side ! As Biggy's players wilted in the heat, a grandstand finish ensued.  Royal Marine Jimmy Ambrose came on for stalwart Shov and new dad Burky for the impressive UB.  However with sober Marky Mark coming on for sturdy Officer Davis with five minutes to go, Potton won a scrum in their half and from this whippet like Matty Brown showed blistering pace and run through the Biggy defence to score a sublime try, well converted. Now the scores were 10 - 10 and Biggy were facing extra time ! However after a rallying call from the side line from Captaino Rutt, Twinkle kicked off and the Biggy forwards played like men possessed forcing Potts to concede the penalty.  To everyone's amazement apart from his, Stan tapped and went and because Potts weren't back, the ref pulled the penalty forward. With a minute to go, Evergreen Roy popped it over and the job was done, all that was left was Twinkle to receive from the kick off and kick it dead.  Biggy had secured the plate and the victory 13 - 10 at the death !

After collecting the trophies, Captaino Rutt said afterwards : " This was a fantastic collective team effort, a mixture of old age and experience !! Potton pushed us all the way, but this side never give up. I am extremely proud to have been Captain of them for the past two seasons. Last season we were winners of the League and now this year the Cup. I would like to thank Saffron Insurance for their kind sponsorship of us this season. "

  1st Xv v OADBY WYGGESTONIANS 14 Apr 2007

Midlands 4 East (South)

Biggleswade 10 Oadby-Wyggestonians 34

This game like so many this season promised much but in the end went the same way as most of the others. Biggleswade competed hard for much of the match but a lack of pace out wide was ruthlessly exploited. Oadby had a couple of tries which made all the difference.

After pressing hard in the opening salvo Biggleswade finally opened their account. Picking up a stray Oadby pass on the half way line Adam Sewell broke free. Hacking on a the ball he won the race for the touchdown under the posts. Mark Rastrick added the two points for the conversion.

Oadby, who claimed to have forty players unavailable quickly struck back with a converted try. They added three more before half-time exposing the serious lack of pace by Biggleswade on the wing. Not really unexpected when a prop cum flanker is put up against quick centres.

Biggleswade’s only response was a Mark Rastrick penalty from forty metres.

Fearing a massacre in the second half in the broiling sun (10-26 at the break) Biggleswade tightened up considerably. The defence was much more robust and the tackling better.

Matt Keen as always was awesome with one crunching effort after another. Karl Marshall too did his bit to atone for unwise comments in the first half that cost Biggleswade considerable ground.

Unfortunately not available every work because of work commitments Martin Matthews had a good match with some determined running.

Finding no way through Oadby added a drop goal to their tally and then another try on the stroke of full-time.

With just the Chairman’s game on 29th April left the curtain is almost down on a dismal season. But the next chapter might bring better things as Biggleswade go into East Midlands / Leicester 1 and the play the likes of Wellingborough OGs, Aylestone St James, Queens and St Neots.

Team: A Burke (D Tyson), D Rogers, R Collarbone, S Barker, T Griffiths, K Marshall, I Jones, P Shea, R Taylor, M Keen, J Young, M Rastrick, A Sewell, M Peace, M Matthews.

  Biggleswade U16s 29      -  Union Sportive de Salles U16s     22

Biggleswade went into this game with a near complete squad, but without having a game for five weeks, and it showed. Numerous handling errors and wayward passes by the home side , and some very good French backs play made for a tight game.
A George Matthews penalty after five minutes put Biggy ahead, but was soon countered by the Salles number eight Laurent Sagette, with Salles failing to convert the try. In wonderful sunshine Gary Athow made a trademark run from the 22 metre line to score under the posts, giving Matthews a simple conversion to take the score to 10 - 5. Biggy seemed in the ascendancy and a great break by fullback Charlie Darlow bought in the forwards and a pop pass set up Athow for his second try of the morning, and undoubtedly the best try of the game. Matthews was again accurate with the kick.
Salles were punishing every Biggleswade mistake and but for some ferocious tackling by Messers West, Phipps, Hudson and Nott, could have scored from some of their flowing backs moves. However, in the scrums, it was a different story, with Biggleswade dominating.
The hard ground conditions were having an affect of both teams and Biggleswade made a number of substitutions, bringing on Michael Haddow, Dean Bartlett and  South African Jonatan Erasmus, who was unlucky not to score on his debut
An interception by Dean Bartlett gave Biggy their third try, with Bartlett just out sprinting the rapid Salles fullback. From the restart, Biggy dithered and the Salles wing Gregory Volff claimed a well deserved try to bring the score to 24 - 15 with ten minutes to go.
The home side now turned on the pressure and, not for the first time opting  to chip ahead rather than run the ball cost points.
The large crowd, boosted by the entire Bedford Blues U16s squad, did not have to wait long before hooker Michael Haddow robbed the ball from an errant Salles lineout to bring the Biggy total to 29 points. This time the conversion attempt sailed wide. Salles were far from beaten and a converted try right at the end took the final score to 29 points to 22
The French visitors were entertained to a lavish buffet provided by the Biggleswade parents lead by Mrs Hamilton, and presentations following the match, at which Biggy coach Stan Matthews, Chairman Thoday and captain Owen Thomas were presented with very fetching French berets!
Salles returned to France on Monday following this successful tour, which saw games with Ampthill, Biggleswade and host club Bedford Blues.

Stockwood Park 39 Biggleswade 10

Midlands 4 East (South) 31/03/07

Despite competing hard for much of the match Biggleswade were again second best. Late changes disrupted the team again. The late call ups included 46 year old Colin Abraham making his league debut for the 1st XV. Colin’s only other previous first team game was in a scratch Sunday XV against the same opponents.

As usual Biggleswade had a much better second half after getting some way behind in the first forty minutes. Biggleswade started well and defended hard against the slope, wind and crowd swollen by VPs.

But after an early exchange of penalties Stockwood’s strong running backs scored tries at frequent intervals. By the break Biggleswade were 3-29 down and a large defeat looked likely.

Matt Keen a contender for captain next season made a marked difference at fly-half. His tackling rate in defence was immense. Matt’s explosive burst of speed often created holes in the Stockwood line. He scored Biggleswade’s only try. It came after a period camped in Stockwood’s “22”. Mark Rastrick added the conversion and slotted home the early penalty.

Other players to shine included Tom O’Connor at full back who covered immense amounts of ground in defence. He made several last gasp tackles in the corner to save certain tries. Also catching the eye was the lively Damian White who chased everything. His enthusiasm was infectious.

In the forwards Darryl Rogers’s fitness meant that he too was able to get quickly about the field. Either side of him he had Dave the Bar Tyson and Colin Abrahams so the front row was solid.

On Easter weekend the team have a rest in preparation for the last league match at home to Oadby-Wyggestonians. Before the match there is a luncheon. The only game this week is away to Datchworth.

Team: D Tyson, D Rogers, C Abraham, T Griffiths, R Collarbone, I Jones, P Shea, K Marshall, R Taylor, M Keen, M Peace, M Rastrick,  N Thoday, D White, T O’Connor.

  Stockwood Park Colts 10pts  Biggleswade Colts 0 - 31/03/07

On a fine day Biggleswade Colts put in a sterling performance against powerful opponents who had beaten them 36-0 in the reverse fixture. With a couple of over-age players allowed Biggy made good use of the extra experience and pace provided by Sam Churms, Aaron Robertson-Cowley and Tom Chalk. With a welcome return for Leo Churms, too, some very constructive rugby was played. The only down side was that there was no warm-up due to coach Churms forgetting the kit!

Early territorial advantage was gained by the visitors with Chalk, Tom Farren, Chris Mills and Robertson-Cowley to the fore. New boy “James” certainly made his presence felt, too, in the face of some fierce intimidation. The loose play was excellent and with a little more luck Biggy would have turned this into points. An early penalty miss from Leo Churms was followed by some powerful breaks from his brother Sam and Chalk but the final pass and support was not quite there and Stockwood defended well. The scrums were getting looser, though, and this, too, needs work in training. To be effective the eight in the scrum have to work as one but they were split too easily and Chalk had to work with poor quality ball. Lineouts, too, need more work but until everyone trains together this will be difficult.

The general standard of play has improved immensely, though, and despite a try conceded before half-time, Biggy might easily have scored a couple themselves. As usual James Matthews put in some huge tackles, bringing down giants twice his size and he deserved his Guinness after the game.

In the second half some great drives by Scad and Farren were spoilt by the final presentation and lack of support but the general play continued to be impressive. Despite being on the wrong end of some interesting decisions, all the boys fought hard and defended superbly – Sam Churms and Robertson-Cowley added some real grit in this area. A little more pace on the ball will see the tries coming – hopefully against Swifts on Saturday – but there was much to admire this week. Leo Churms made some good breaks and tried varying his options, whilst “JB” and “Rojer” counter-attacked very effectively.

A late try after weak defending when the line was too slow in coming up gave the opposition an undeserved two-try victory. As the pack tired, so the possession became slower and the lineout suffered but the Colts did not give up. On the attack right to the end, who know what might have happened if the coach had remembered the kit and done a proper warm-up!

Team: Ross Taylor, Jamie Griffin, Adam Wuestner, Ben Dackombe, Chris Mills, Tom Farren, James, Tim Wilkes, Tom Chalk, Leo Churms, Sam Churms, Aaron Robertson-Cowley, James Brown, James Matthews, Rojer Patki.

Pitch Preparation. All of the pitches, both Club and Sheepwalk have now been top-dressed with fertilizer, thanks to Richard Kendall. At the end of the season there are plans to re-seed part the floodlit pitch, which will take it out of use for some months. Timing of this is dependant upon the weather!
Sheepwalk pitches still need a lot of work stone clearing, more details to follow after the club AGM.
