Early Experiments (2001)

Objectives

  • To prove that relatively few men were needed to pick up and move a 4 ton stone a short distance forward and subsequently to prove that this action could be repeated relatively quickly in order to transport the stone a reasonable distance during the course of one day.
  • To ascertain that this method could have been used when travelling uphill.
  • To prove that relatively few men could erect a 4 ton stone without the need to build earth ramps.
  • To establish whether the above experiments might be successfully repeated using bigger and heavier stones in the future.

These experiments took place at the rear of my business premises in Derby England in the spring and early summer of 2001 using a replica concrete megalith cast on site for the purpose. A total workforce of 8 men took part in the experiments and were able to achieve all the above objectives satisfactorily except the distance that might be covered during the transport experiment. We were disappointed in this respect but agreed that with practise and perhaps some technical improvements to the method a distance of half a mile per day might in the future be proved possible.
