POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE NUMBERS

ADDITION

With both signs the same, add and prefix with the same sign.

(+2) + (+4) = +6

(-2) + (-4) = -6

For unlike signs, take the difference between the two numbers and prefix it with the sign of the largest number.

(+5) + (-2) = +3

(+2) + (-5) = -3

SUBTRACTION

Change the sign of the number being subtracted and add the two numbers.

(+2) - (-1) becomes (+2) - (+1) and adding = +3

(-2) - (+1) becomes (-2) - (-1) and adding = -3

(-2) - (-1) becomes (-2) - (+1) and adding = -1

(+2) - (+1) becomes (+2) - (-1) and adding = +1

MULTIPLICATION

(5) x (3) = 15

(-5) x (-3) =15

(2) x (-4) = -8

(-2) x (4) = -8

If two numbers have the same sign then the answer will be positive.

Different signs will produce a negative number.

DIVISION

(8)/(4) = 2

(-8)/(-2) = 4

(-8)/(2) = -4

(8)/(-2) = -4

If two numbers have the same sign then the answer will be positive.

Different signs will produce a negative number.
