DECIMAL NUMBERS

Write the numbers down with the decimal points below each other.

Then add or subtract as normal.

 ADDITION

SUBTRACTION

For multiplication, multiply the two numbers, ignoring the decimal point.

Count the total number of figures after the decimal points in the first numbers (two in the example below).

Mark off from the right side this number to position the decimal point.

MULTIPLICATION

For division make the divisor a whole number by moving the decimal point to the right.

Move the decimal point in the dividend the same number of steps, adding zeros if needed.

Then divide.

DIVISION

The decimal point in the result appears above the decimal point in the dividend.

MULTIPLYING AND DIVIDING DECIMAL NUMBERS BY 10, 100, 1000 ETC.
