TACHOMETERS AND TACHOGENERATORS


These measure the angular velocity (speed of rotation) of shafts, wheels etc.

In the example below the rotating magnet induces eddy currents in the aluminium cup which tries to rotate against the force of the spring.

This produces a torque which is proportional to the speed of rotation.

The speed is indicated on a scale.

 


A tachogenerator is a small AC or DC generator which can be used in  motor speed control
