Worship and Spiritual Life of our Church

Services

We usually have a fairly "traditional" form of worship led by the minister. At morning service, beginning at 11 am, the choir sings an anthem and the bible is read by members of the congregation.

Several times a year services are led by our Junior Church and Youth Group or by our World Church Committee. There are usually between about 140 and 180 people at morning worship and fellowship continues after the service when everyone is invited to the small hall for coffee. There is also a small bookstall selling books mainly of a religious or spiritual nature.

We are not having regular evening services at the moment (whilst we have no minister in post). When we do have services in the evening, these begin at 6.30 pm and tend to have a quieter, more reflective character. The congregation is usually considerably smaller than at morning worship. We do sometimes arrange "discussion services" on some Sunday evenings. At these, we often have a visiting speaker and the service is followed by coffee and discussion. On the evening of Palm Sunday our drama group, the Goldsmith Players, present Passiontide dramas which have become an important part of our church calendar.

Large print hymn books are available and, for the hard of hearing, there is a 'loop' system covering the whole of the church, including the balcony.

We have an "Orchestra Sunday", once a year, when a thirty to forty strong orchestra gathered from members and friends comes together to accompany the hymns and provide the music for the service.

Our children share with us the first part of the morning service, which includes their own special address and hymn. They then leave to enjoy their own activities in the Junior Church and Youth Group. For the under threes, a crêche is provided. Parents may leave children before the service or take them to join the crêche when the older children leave.

Marriage and Funeral Services

Marriage and funeral services are held in our church as are baptisms. To help people prepare for a marriage or funeral service, we have documents containing lists of hymns and readings that people may like to look at as they begin thinking about their service. These, together with another booklet may be found by following this link to our publications.

Extending worship and learning

In addition to Sunday worship, we hold two series of House Groups a year, one during Lent and one in the autumn. These are prepared by our Christian Education Committee which also plans special series of evening services involving speakers from outside the church. Our World Church Committee keeps us informed about world church issues, leading services twice a year and the Prayer Circle is also an important part of our fellowship.

Supporting people with particular needs

We genuinely wish to make everyone feel welcome to our church. We are aware that many people have particular needs and aim to respond by making provision so that they may access our services appropriately. Our church has:
