Established in 1943 as a means of relieving the tensions of the latter war years, Newport Male Voice Choir started with a membership of 25, with rehearsals in the front room of a house in Colne Street, Newport, under the direction of singing teacher Agnes White, the choirs first Musical Director.
After the end of the war, membership increased and the Choir made rapid progress in fulfilling BBC radio engagements, competing at Eisteddfodau and giving public concerts.
We participated in many music festivals and represented Wales in the “Four Countries” recording at the Reading Music Festival.
Successful European Tours followed and on several occasions we performed at The Royal Albert Hall as part of the “1000 Voice Choir”. We performed during the UK visit of the Japanese Emperor at Cardiff Castle and, with the arrival of the 2nd Millennium, have seen successful tours to Canada and Germany and together with other members of the Welsh Association Of Male Voice Choirs, performed with many world renowned soloists at Remembrance and Commemorative Services at Cardiff Castle’s Coopers Fields, St David's Hall and Oxfords Sheldonian Theatre.
2003 saw the Choir celebrate its 60th jubilee year, a special year for us, culminating in a celebration Dinner when Choristers families and Guests drank a toast to the Choirs continued success.
This year, 2006, we are combining with the Icelandic Choir Korinn in June for a concert with them during their tour of the United Kingdom.
In May we went to Frome, Somerset, for a concert in aid of Prostrate Cancer. This followed on from last year when Frome invited us, for the first time, to raise funds for cancer. In October 2005, we did a combined concert with Caerphilly, Maesteg and Oxford Welsh choirs which took place in the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford and to follow on from that, this year, being Caerphilly’s centenary year, we are doing a combined concert in Caerphilly.
In May we have a Rotary Club Concert, raising funds for the Visually Handicapped and in October we go to Scotland for a weeks tour, this will be our 2nd year to travel north of the border.
Besides all that we have our regular concerts at Senior Citizens homes which we visit twice a year.
In November or December, we have our annual concert after which we break for Christmas.
Then in March 2007, we have the “1000 Voices” concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Between these concerts we try to fit in a couple of concerts locally to raise funds for ourselves.
We are looking forward to the year ahead, visiting new places and meeting new people through
"MAKING MUSIC, MAKING FRIENDS".
