Some time in the 1960’s classical composer student David Fanshawe manage to gain a grant to travel to and all around Africa to record tribal and traditional musics. 

This he did, and then he came back and wrote pieces of classical-style music to integrate around the African recordings. The piece was called “African Sanctus”.  A few years later, perhaps he was short of a few pence or something, he released “The Spirit of African Sanctus” which was the original music withour any of the Western adulterations.

If you want funky free jazz then this is it - but with origins going much further back than anything we can dig up in the west.
