Grasstrack 1000cc RH Sidecars

Once bitten by it, the racing bug doesn't let go. David had already realised this so when the chance came he accepted the offer to race with Steve Smith. Team 121 Motorsport was on the up. Steve and David soon settled in and I helped out where I could, slightly jealous of these guys who raced while I watch their progress. David wanted to learn as much as he could about this sport and would go out of his way to gain as much experience as he could. This even took him on to sidecar speedway, which lead to my chance to make the step up from pit crew to race crew. Any nerves at the beginning of the day soon left as the tapes went up for my first ride in the chair. We made it safely round the four laps and held third place as the flag came down. Not bad seeing as we had never even tried a "start" before! There was no stopping us in the next heat, a clean gate from Steve and we reached the first corner before anyone else. There was no catching us from there, our first heat win. Later that season we got another heat win on the boarded circuit at Collier Street. This marked a milestone in Steve's career as this was something of a dream come true for him. I'm very happy to have been on board with him when it finally happened.

After two season with team121, Steve had  new direction in his life and decided on a break from racing. I was told that John Stafford was looking for a new passenger so I went and introduced myself to him. We seemed to hit it off both on and off the track and went on to record some successes that year. The next season ended under great clouds with our sport suffering some very sad losses as well as serious injuries. This made our season of major mechanical problems pale into insignificance.  Hopefully, there are better times to come for the following season.
