A Tribute to the "Wee Yins"

This site isn't all about the Munros some of my favourite hills are mole hills compared to the mighty Munros, with these hills you can get up in well under an hour for most and each offer spectacular views and are mostly pretty close to my home in Glasgow.  This list may get larger in time ill keep you posted.  So what does it take to meet Fraz's quality wee hills list... well basically they got to have a dam good view which the hills below are not short of ! most of these hills have been climbed on numerous numerous occasions, Conic hill must have topped over 50 mark by now ooofa !  But they bring me back every time... right enough of this verbal chit chat, what are these stupendous little hills?

Conic Hill (1027 Ft) - Balmaha Nr Loch Lomond

Conic Hill is by far my favourite wee yin and for views of Loch Lomond forget *yawn* Ben Lomond this little guy is where you want to be.  You can see right up the loch To Ben Lomond on the Eastern side and The Arrochar Alps on the western side.  I'm sure this hill has been called many a nasty name by walkers as it sits as the final obstacle at the end of the first day of the west Highland Way having walked 20 miles already.  Ach well try it without a 60 litre pack and you will change your mind.  I often climb this hill just before sunset as the sun-sets across the loch and is a fantastic site.  At my last visit I made it 48 accents, that's gotta be some sort of record... yeehaa ! One of the many views you get from Conic Hill - The sun setting over Loch Lomond

Other Photos from Conic:    View up Loch Lomond to the Arrochar Alps  The Guardian of Conic hill - This things evil im telling you !  The highland fault line through Loch Lomond - right hand side highlands - left the lowlands  bit shocked the day i saw this - how can a hill be closed ?  view through the trees on Conic Hill to its western shore  The final climb to the summit !

The Whangie (800ft) - Carbeth just north of Glasgow

An example vieew you get from The Whangie, shows Loch Lomond, Ben Lomond and Arrochar Alps The Whangie is a very popular hill amongst us Wegies, and quite rightly so look at this view you get of Loch Lomond !  My record for this hill is 14 minutes try beat that ! (mae dog still beat me).  An excellent walk takes you down the other side to a brilliant little reservoir which if you live in North Glasgow this was the one that poisoned the whole water supply few years back.  Cant recommend this hill highly enough, watch out for the scouts though as there is an international scout camp about 2 minutes away !

More Whangie pics: Nice light shining on the Campsies another excellent batch of hills View up Loch Lomond to Arrochar Alps and Ben Lomond Burncrook reservoir (one that poinsed our water supply few years back) view over to Loch Lomond again ( made it fancy this time) Ah we made it...even the mutt !  Arty farty shot taken on a freezing cold January night

The Cobbler (2800ft) - Arrochar The fangs of The Cobbler

By no means is the Cobbler a "wee yin" it is 200ft short of being a Munro thus its got to go here.  The cobbler is definitely the best of the Arrochar Alps with its huge fangs.  Many a Munro Bagger will miss it out but that is there loss.  The summit crags boast some of the Southern Highlands best rock climbing and a treat is in store for the common Joe walker at the summit ! a short stack which can be scrambled up is an excellent place to test the nerves of the walker.   Ben Arthur as it is also known is a classic ascent and one which you wont forget in a while.

Ben A'an (1488ft) - Aberfoyle(ish)

Loch Katrine as seen from summit of Ben A'an Ben A'an sits at the heart of the Trossachs NP and is one of the more popular walks.  For very good reason ! the view from the top of Loch Katrine (pictured) is nothing short of spectacular.  The climb is on easy paths so one for anyone.  Other views you get are that of Loch Lomond and Ben Venue another excellent climb.  In the summer you can catch the Sir Walter Scott sailing up the loch and twice a day the sound of bagpipes drifts up the mountain side !  Another great walk here, for sure.  Should only take about 40 minutes max to get up.
