Stob Coire Easain, Stob Coire Mheadhoin - Loch Treig Hills - July 2006

Stob Coire Easain, Stob Coire Mheadhoin Information

Stob Coire Mheadhoin and Stob Coire Easain are big hills ! being next to the Lochaber 400footers this can be expected though.  They are two join together to create a massive coire and ultimately an awesome airy ridge walk between the two.   For sure the best aspect of this walk has got to be the views westward to the Grey Corries, Aonachs and the big man Nevis.  Walking shouldn't be that bad although the descent between the two could give your feet a good work out !  On a hot summers day make sure you pack plenty of water, you will not get a drop until you have completed the descent into the coire near the ned of the walk.  I certainly wish i had packed more ! Definitely one of the better Munro walks with for me Stob Coire Easain taking peak of the day at a grand old height of 1115m.

Stob Coire Easain, Stob Coire Mheadhoin Route

There are a ton of different ways to start this walk but after half an hour or so all routes end up at the same part so whatever way you start its all good.  My route starts from the car park in Fersit and there is space there for quite a few cars.  Walk back up the road for 10 minutes until you pass a small pond like thing on your left.  After this turn of to the left and head for the obvious shoulder of Stob Coire Mheadhoin The initial pull up is tough on the heather but the views start to open out behind you up the valley to Loch Laggan especially at sunrise time ! its beautiful !  After this there is a 15 minute or so plateau walk  along very boggy ground with the Grey Corries appearing right next to you.  A final pull up another sharp climb takes you onto the summit ridge, where its gentle and enjoyable walking to the actual summit of Stob Coire Mheadhoin.  Take in the views of Loch Laggan and the Grey Corries to either side of you, Loch Treig is surprisingly well hidden from the actual summit, rather disappointing !  Stob Coire Easain comes next and it looks like such an amazing walk over to it...and you wouldn't be far wrong !  It really is a brilliant coire in-between the two, low and deep makes for some superb walking.  Continue down the south west ridge of Stob Coire Mheadhoin down the the bottom of the col.  This is a tough descent on a lot of scree but all adds to the enjoyment eh !  Its a steep puppy of a climb up Easain but over quickly due to the sheer steepness.  And there we go were on top and brilliant views again of the Grey Corries (i went back to the area a week later to climb the Grey Corries just because of the views you get from this walk !)  I glance at the watch...6am.  This made me laugh two of the toughest Munros climbed and the majority of the country are still in there kips, this made me smile!  Anyways now waiting about head back down Stob Coire Easains ridge and back to the col.  At the lowest point in the col take to the bowl of the corrie and nick your way down best that you can, its steep and a bit dodgy on the feet.  try and hug to the lower slops of Stob Coire Mheadhoin and you will find a path that skirts round the mountain.  Its a bugger of a path, one of those one leg shorter than the other would be mighty handy scenarios !  Anyway following this path takes you back to the small plateau mentioned at the start about 300m up on Stob Coire Mheadhoin.  Now just follow the route you cam in on back out, easy !  Back to the car 7.30 am get in there, and a view of the sunrise i will not forget for a while !
