Elizabeth Kent 1812- ?

The Story of a Family of Derbyshire Mill Owners

Elizabeth was the youngest Child of John and Elizabeth born in Derby after their move from Measham. In 1840 she married Henry Kent in St Werburg’s Church, Derby. Henry Kent’s family had its roots in Alrewas, Staffordshire. Subsequently there were a number of businesses in Staffordshire and Leicestershire which were carried out in conjunction between the two families.

In 1851 the census report lists Elizabeth and Henry Kent with their five children living in Clarence Road, Leicester where they also had a tobacco and snuff manufactory. In 1857 John Kent was listed in a directory as proprietor of a needle and wire manufactory at Spa Bank (John was probably Henry’s brother)

Their son, Henry Kent Junior, born in 1846, was recorded in the 1881 census as being a “Wine manufacturer’s warehouse master”, married, living in Calow Close, Brampton, Derby

Pictured here is another of their children John Hackett Kent b. 1850. He qualified as an architect in England and then took his family to America where he had a successful career. His most memorable project was the Montana State Capitol which celebrated its centenary in 2000. His grand daughter was invited as a special guest to the celebration.
