Coldstream, Berwickshire, Scotland

These are my Scottish ancestors who lived around Coldstream, Berwickshire in the 19th Century. TURNER, MURRAY, MUNRO, THORBURN (and others). It has been a very difficult area to research, as many people are missing from parish records, including my own great-grandmother. I would be particuarly interested in tracing the descendants of Matthew Gilroy mentioned below. That is William GILROY, born abt 1868, Barbara GILROY, born abt 1869, Martha GILROY, born abt 1871, and John GILROY, born abt 1875. I would also be particularly interested in hearing from any descendants of William MURRAY and Mary GREY (see below).

FREDERICK TURNER

Son of Ann

Born around 1820 in Kelso, Roxburghshire, Scotland.

Occupation in 1851 : Master Coach Painter

Married Barbara MURRAY, February, 1843 in Coldstream, Berwickshire

Died before 1881

Children see Barbara Murray

BARBARA MURRAY

Daughter of William MURRAY and Barbara THORBURN.

Born April 18th, 1823 in Coldstream, Berwick

Barbara, as a widow, and her daughter, Elizabeth, were living in Newcastle upon Tyne at the time of the 1881 Census..

WILLIAM MURRAY

Parents - Unknown

Living in Cornhill at the time of his marriage.

Married Barbara THORBURN December, 1801 in Coldstream, Berwickshire.

BARBARA THORBURN

Birth around 1777, died October 1837 in Coldstream.

Father possibly George THORBURN

Possible twins siblings

Agnes THORBURN and William THORBURN, b. February 1787. (Names used by Barbara for her own children.)

I have discovered that although there are very few mentions of Thorburn in the Scottish Origins database for the Coldstrrean area, according to the 1851 Census returns Thorburn was a very common name in the surrounding area. The link to George, Agnes and William Thorburn mentioned above, is not proven, as yet and is looking increasingly tenuous.
