Wickham 2w-2PMR trollies 900332, PWM2807 and "Garston"

There are currently three very similar small self propelled trollies in the Foxfield collection, all built by D Wickham of Ware. This firm supplied hundreds of these basic trollies in various gauges to railways in the UK and throughout the world. These were used by track maintenance teams as a quick and portable method of reaching remote sites by rail, and can seat 8, or possibly 10 if required. The trollies were easily lifted off the track out of the way of passing trains, and turned for the trip home. Four lifting handles are provided, one at each corner. Usually powered by contemporary motor car petrol engines, they have a reputation for highly alarming speeds and a lively ride. Although several trollies have been used at Foxfield for track inspection and maintenance, or more often just for fun, none of the three currently on the railway are operational and all require extensive restoration.

2w-2PMR 900332 Wickham 497, built for the LNER in 1932, and 2w-2PMR PWM2807 Wickham 4985, built for BR in 1949 were both acquired direct from British Rail in the early 1970s. To give an idea of their small size, they measure only 8 feet in length, 4'6" in width and stand about 6'6" above rail level. They have a simple lengthwise bench seat and no sides, any weather protection being glazed end panels and canvas screens that roll down from the roof. Number 900332 is currently stored off the rails at Foxfield Colliery and PWM2807 is at Caverswall Road, both in very poor condition.

2w-2PMR Wickham 7139, built 1955, was purchased from British Transport Docks Board at Garston in Lancashire, delivered to Foxfield on 27 November 1976, and known at the railway as "Garston". It has transverse seats and side panels with folding doors, neater end screens with larger windows, though in other respects it is very similar to the earlier two. It is stored on a short length of disconnected track near the loco shed at Caverswall Road, where some restoration has been carried out by junior members in recent years..
