Road, 17 July 2004
A
modern and very common design of Ruston, built in June 1960 with a Paxman
V6 engine and electrical transmission driving a single traction motor on
the rear wheels. Number 424841 was built in 1960 and has detail differences
from number 423657 built two years earlier,
notably the design of the bonnet grills. It weighs about 30 tons.
The early history of
this locomotive was at the firm of Pilkington Brothers of Kirk Sandall,
Doncaster, until about 1970 when it was purchased by GEC Ruston Paxman
Diesels Ltd of Newton-le-Willows. It was then moved by rail to GEC Turbine
Generators Ltd at Stafford on 28 November 1974. Known there as "Tonka"
due to its yellow toy-like livery, it was allocated plant number 11044
and was used to shunt around the factory. Out of use from 1995 after rail
traffic dwindled, "Tonka" was the last locomotive on the site. Purchased
for preservation in working order by a Foxfield member, "Tonka" moved to
the railway on 13 June 1997, and was in operation shortly after arrival
still carrying its GEC yellow livery. Renamed "Roman", it is being equipped
with vacuum brakes to augment its airbarke system, and has been repainted
into a mid-grey livery

A
previous locomotive from GEC at Stafford, English Electric 4wBE number
EE788, was part of the Foxfield collection for about 15 years but has since
moved on to the Ribble
Steam Railway, though its runner wagon EE
flat wagon No1 remains at Foxfield.
Another surviving Ruston 200DE is 424839, under restoration for use on Northumbria Rail and named "Northumbria", see http://www.northumbria-rail.co.uk/loco_specs.php?numba=NRG1. Below:
