Shelton Iron & Steel 20 ton
Double Bolster wagon no 23

The
builder and date of this bolster wagon is not known but it once formed
part of the internal fleet at Shelton Steelworks and would have been used
to carry short lengths of steel section. In addition it would have been
used as a reach wagon to allow overhanging end loads to be placed on bogie
bolster wagons. The size of the journals and generally hefty construction
suggest a payload of about 20 tons was intended, and it is possible that
it was built only for internal use by using old wagon parts. The axleboxes
are standard RCH 1923 design 20ton items, but the buffers probably date
back much earlier than these. Arriving by road to Foxfield in September
1979, number 23 is now used around Caverswall Road depot for carrying large
locomotive components such as boilers and tanks.
