Shelton
12 ton Locomotive Sand wagon, formerly 12/13 ton coal wagon (RCH 1923 design)
SIS number 202
Above:
Shelton loco sand wagon SIS202 stands at Caverswall Road station on 1 May
1994
This
wagon was formerly used to carry locomotive sand around the Shelton Steelworks
in Stoke-on-Trent, but it started life as a mineral wagon, probably either
5, 7 or 8 planks in height, to the Railway Clearing House designs of 1923.
The wooden floor was replaced with a steel one for ease of shovelling sand
and reduce leaks. The sides were cut down to just three planks, a full
length opening door was provided on one side and the door was removed on
the other. If an end door was ever present, no trace now remains, and steel
U-channels replaced the original wooden end stanchions. Likewise there
is no evidence of its previous numbers or owners, and it was probably acquired
by Shelton for internal use in the 1950s when large numbers of these wagons
were withdrawn from BR.
SIS
number 202 arrived at Foxfield in September 1979 in very good condition,
due to spending much of its life at the steelworks inside the locomotive
shed so the loco sand stayed dry, and it still retains its bright yellow
livery. It has seen extensive use carrying ballast, coal, spoil and scrap
metal but is now in need of substantial timber replacement, including both
headstocks and curb rails. For comparison, one of the Shelton
platelayers tool vans (number 1) is also a conversion of an RCH 1923
coal wagon, by the simple addition of extra planks and a roof.
