Ruston & Hornsby 0-4-0DE class
165DE built 1958, number 423657
![]() Above:
Ruston & Hornsby 0-4-0DE 423657 as restored at Caverswall Road in 2002
Built
in Lincoln as a demonstration locomotive this locomotive visited several
prospective customers before passing to the Rugby works of BTH Ltd as a
yard shunter. It was a modern and successful design with electric transmission
from a Ruston 6VPH engine developing 155 horsepower, and 154 were eventually
built. A cheaper more conventional version of the design was also available,
using mechanical transmission: 124 of them were made. The use of number
423657 at BTH Ltd was appropriate as the firm had in fact provided the
electrical equipment on these locos.
Number 423657 became
redundant when coal traffic by rail ceased at BTH Ltd and it was initially
preserved at the Battlefield Line Railway, arriving on 7 January 1984.
It was painted in a black livery and used there for shunting and permanent
way work. To increase its usefulness it was fitted with vacuum brake equipment
driven by a separate donkey engine, and using ex-BR DMU components. 423657
moved to the Foxfield Railway on 27 July 1996 and has since been fitted
with replacement wheelsets and painted in lined maroon. It is known as
"Rachael" but does not currently carry the name.
