Non-Passenger Carriage Stock at Foxfield Railway

Non-passenger carriage stock may sound like a contradiction in terms, but the main-line railway companies operated a range of vehicles to carry parcels, mail, luggage, horses, pigeons, even motorcars at passenger train speeds, and this required stock built to a higher specification than ordinary wagons. The bearings and springs had to be similar to those used for passenger carriages, and the wheels were usually 3'6" in diameter like carriages, rather than the 3'0" diameter typically used for wagons, to improve the ride. NPCS had to be compatible with passenger train stock, so as well as vacuum brakes, they were often equipped with steam heating pipes so that they could be marshalled at the front of a train and heat from the locomotive could still pass through to reach the carriages. Some companies, such as the North Staffordshire Railway, also fitted many of their NPCS with dual brakes - vacuum and Westinghouse air systems -  so their stock could travel over neighbouring companies' lines.

Foxfield has five items that are strictly classed as NPCS:

MR bogie Parcels Van no 38268
LMS bogie Theatrical Scenery vans nos 37508, 37518 and 37519
SR 4w Parcels and Miscellaneous Van (PMV) no 1703
