Underground Bogie Rail Bolster wagon 531006
Above: LUL bogie rail bolster wagon as delivered to
Caverswall Road
This
large modern wagon is with small wheeled diamond framed bogies and a low
steel floor for ease of handling 60 foot rails. It has small winch arms
fitted, with ends that flip out beyond the loading gauge to enable individual
rails to be picked up and set down alongside the track.Small stanchions
ensure the rails stay on the bolsters. Number 531006 was built by the Gloucestershire
Railway Carriage & Wagon Co for use on track renewal on London Underground,
and is a good example of the equipment now available for permanent way
work. Despite its relatively modern design it was rendered redundant with
several others and was purchased by a member to improve rail handling at
Foxfield, in place of the miscellaneous flat wagon conversions currently
employed.
Parts
from an identical wagon were also acquired when it was cut up for scrap,
to equip the example now at Foxfield with additional side stanchions, but
these have yet to be fitted. It carries a yellow livery with black bogies.
Identical
wagons are also preserved on the Severn Valley Railway and at the Embsay
& Bolton Abbey Railway - for a photo see http://www.pogo.org.uk/railway/photos/jp02.jpg
