[photograph by John Sherratt] This neat modern 0-6-0 locomotive was originally ordered from Hunslet in Leeds for the nearby NCB Savile Colliery in February 1953, as a standard 16" design of which Hunslet had built many. The order was changed in April to despatch the locomotive to NCB Glasshoughton Colliery, where it was delivered in November 1954 and numbered 4. After nine years of intensive use "Glasshoughton No4" was returned to Hunslet in 1963 for minor repair work, and whilst there, it was fitted with a Hunslet Patent Underfeed stoker and gas producing equipment. When the work was complete it was returned to Glasshoughton in March 1964. Shortly afterwards, "Glasshoughton No4" was damaged in a collision with a diesel, "Glasshoughton No1", and spent the last days at the colliery out of use in the shed. Preservation came when in June 1973 "Glasshoughton No4" was sold and moved to the Lakeside Railway Estates Ltd, Carnforth. The loco was again put up for sale, and it was purchased and moved to Steamport Railway Museum at Southport in December 1982. Extensive repairs saw the loco re-enter traffic in the early 1990s, and then begin a number of hire visits to various railways, initially at the Battlefield line in 1994, and then on to the Pontypool & Blaenevon Railway in 1995 & 1996. Sporting a black livery and full signwriting on the tanks, "Glasshoughton No4" then visited Foxfield and after use on special events during the 2000 season was stripped for overhaul. A new inner firebox has been manufactured and will be installed shortly, but the loco will be based at the Ribble Steam Railway at Preston Docks - see http://www.ribblesteam.org.uk/. Meanwhile, a couple more pictures of "Glasshoughton No4"'s turns at the Foxfield Railway Steam Gala 2000:
