Carriage Stock at Foxfield Railway
Carriages at Foxfield span nearly 100 years of design development - compare
the NSR carriage body number 61 built
in the mid 1870s with the most recent BR
Mark 2 carriage built in 1966. Both were built with the identical purpose
of carrying third class passengers, but the differences in size and construction
are enormous. All the carriages represent types in use in North Staffordshire
and Derbyshire throughout a century. On a preserved railway carriage have
a very practical purpose of carrying fare-paying passengers, and for this
the BR Mark 1 vehicles dating from the 1950s are mainly used, but it is
hoped to bring some of the vintage stock up to passenger carrying standard
one day. Not to be forgotten is the "non-passenger carriage stock" or NPCS.
At Foxfield there can be seen examples of a couple of common types.
