BR Mark 1 bogie second class gangwayed tourist open (TSO) carriage, number W4762

Above: BR Mark 1 open second class carriage W4762 as delivered to Foxfield in 2002
This carriage is the "open" example of the BR standard second class vehicle, also represented at Foxfield by the BR Mark 1 corridor seconds. The bodyshell of the two designs is identical, only the interior differs. Seating 64 passengers at tables of four, it has a centre aisle rather than a side corridor. A pair of toilets are located at one end.

W4762 was built by BR at its carriage works at York in 1957 to diagram 93 on lot 30375 and latterly ran on the Western region. It was acquired July 2002 in an exchange with the East Lancashire Railway in 2002, for Mark 2 SO vehicle 5241 which had a lower seating capacity. W4762 had been repainted in BR rail blue and grey while in preservation, but was repaired and repainted in BR lined maroon at Foxfield in summer 2003.
