BR Mark
1 bogie second class gangwayed compartment (SK) carriages, numbers M25225
and M25607
![]() Above:
BR corridor second class carriage M25607 in passenger service in 2000
These carriages originate as one of the most common designs on the nationalised rail network, built for all types of cross country and long distance loco hauled services. They comprise with eight second class compartments seating 64 passengers and accessed by a side corridor, as opposed to the "open" design which used the same bodyshell, represented at Foxfield by BR Mark 1 open second W4762. Bogies originally B1 but replaced by the heavy cast iron Commonwealth type on later builds, and many carriages in service into the 1980s had their bogies changed for the B4 type as fitted to later designs of carriage. They have also been the most common carriage design at Foxfield, four examples of corridor seconds have been in passenger service. All had detail differences, but only two remain on the railway at present, the others having been replaced with other types that better suit the needs of our passengers. M25225
was built by Metro Cammell in Birmingham to diagram 147 in 1957, on lot
30230. It rides on the original B1 bogies. M25225 was purchased privately
from BR service in 1976 and moved to Foxfield by road in the company of
sister carriage M25231
which has since left the railway. They were repainted into a two colour
livery similar to BR carmine and cream and put into passenger service to
replace the "observation cars" converted from LMS
bogie scenery and parcels vans. Unfortunately in the long term both
carriages were in need of major structural body repairs and they were replaced
by M25607 and M25891 which arrived in 1989 in much better condition and
have been maintained as such. M25225 has been stored at Foxfield Wood sidings
for several years and suffered from major vandalism, such that it is unlikely
to be restored for further use.

M25607
was built by BR at Wolverton Works in 1958 to diagram 146 on lot 30426,
it was renumbered W18607 in 1980 when transferred to the Western Region,
but by the late 1980s it had returned to the Midland Region. At some point
its original B1 bogies have been replaced by the high speed B4 type. It
finished its main line career as part of a locomotive test rain, numbered
DB977513 in the departmental series, but being vacuum braked only it became
redundant as more locomotives have been fitted with air brakes. M25607
arrived at Foxfield by road in June 1989 and has been restored to the lined
maroon livery of the 1960s. It has also had a handbrake wheel fitted and
received various repairs to the sides and lower ends to ensure a long life
in passenger carrying service.
For the Vintage Carriage Survey entry for M25607 see: http://vintagecarriagestrust.org/sd/1768.HTM The
similar carriage that arrived in 1989 was M25891,
built at by BR at Derby Works in 1961 on lot 30685. Its main difference
from M25607 was that it rode on on Commonwealth bogies which proved too
heavy for use at Foxfield. In the locomotive test train it had been renumbered
DB977518. At Foxfield it was restored to 1960s lined maroon livery after
some body repairs but after several years in passenger service M25891 was
sold on to the Churnet Valley Railway in autumn 2005. Below: BR Mark 1 Corridor Second carriage diagram
