BR 20 ton Brakevan B950661

Above: BR 20 ton brakevan B950661 after restoration at Caverswall Road in 2000

Although a typical standard British Railways brakevan, derived from a post-war LNER diagram, of which many dozens are preserved, B950661 is distinguished as being one of the earliest built, at Darlington, in 1950 to diagram 1/504. Its last use involved detailed workings that were painted in italic script on the body. Purchased from Leamington as part of a batch of wagons that included many of the “Windbreaker” fleet, B950661 arrived on 14 May 1995 and has undergone extensive restoration at Foxfield including the renewal of the entire bodyside planking, but has yet to see much use.

Ironically B950661 is slightly older but overall in far better condition than its sister B951789 which was a familiar sight in use at Foxfield for several years after arrival in 1974. The body of B951789 practically disintegrated to the point where it was no longer safe, and after a period in store it was sold for thorough rebuilding to a group based at Long Marston.
